I missed this start of this thread but are you using "chat" to handle
the login sequence for "pppd". If so, are you using the "-v" argument
with "chat"? I use the "-v" flag when I debug a login script but then
take it out once the script is debugged so the userid and password no
longer get wrtten to the "/var/log/messages" file..
