My computer was doing exactly the same thing in Linux, OS/2, and Win95.
Because of this I assumed a hardware problem. My house is not air
conditioned and it's been HOT lately to say the least, but I finally got
around to installing a window AC unit in the room with the computer, and
the problem has (so far) gone away completely. My computer must have
been getting too hot. I've got one of those early Cyrix P200+ (gigantic
tracing, pre MMX, and pre low voltage core...) processors (mine is
headstamped IBM), and I suspect that it was overheating. Either that,
or it's one of my memory chips on the frits (due to heat?).
