Quoting from WvDial's web site at <A HREF="http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/";><A HREF="http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/</A">http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/</A</A>> :

WvDial is a system application for Unix users. The job of WvDial is to
connect your Linux workstation to the internet as easily as possible --
it will automatically detect your modem, (set the initialization string)
and it can log into almost any Internet Provider's server without any
special configuration. (CIS/AOL are problems.)

It's dialup networking for Linux that doesn't require chat scripts.

It has no GUI. Run it from a term window, or without, your choice. I use
XFce x-window manager, and have a button on the control panel that
simply calls: wvdial. I never see anything from WvDial while it's
running. To disconnect I have a second button in XFce that calls:
killall wvdial. I changed the permissions to ttyS0 so that all users (my
wife and I) on this box can run WvDial, not just root.

Avery Pennarun, co-author, is incredibly quick with his help when ya run
into trouble.

WvDial, imo, should be bundled with SuSE's 6.0 release. It's a great
alternative to KDE's dialer (for those of us who choose not to run KDE.)
