each rom set needs to go in a dir named exactly how the zip is titled. 
That is the mame rom naming convention.  So, if you downloaded
digdugnm.zip, it would go in ~/roms/digdugnm.  Mame wants a dir, not
loose roms. Did you edit your Makefile with your pertinent info prior to
compiling?
