Gnome isn't a window manager and neither is kde, although the kde
distribution includes the kde window manager, kfm.  Kde isn't going away
anytime soon, it's a nice environment with a lot of applications.  I
really don't want to go any further because this may spawn another kde
v. gnome discussion.  Go try both and run the one you like.
