I haven't followed gnome very much, but is the only difference between
gnome and kde the fact that gnome's widget set is gnu and kde's isn't?  if
this is the case, couldn't a compatible widget set be made for kde so that
the work of the developers isn't lost, and there is a single widget window
manager?
