xmame works great in both svga and x, and has excellent support for the
linux kernel joystick driver.  I have written a letter to one of the
snes9x coders pissing and moaning about the horrible joystick
implementation in snes9x.  They wrote their own joystick drivers for
snes9x, hopefully future versions will integrate the existing kernel
joystick driver code.
