You did not say which Linux distribution you have(or perhaps I missed
that?)
In any event, if you have Debian then installing from the "official"
CD-ROMs using "dselect" is much simpler for us "newbies." From the
command line enter <dselect>
(not including the carrots) and follow the instructions. It will not only
help you with dependencies, but avoid conflicts.

(It is a little cryptic, but it works very well.)
