[S.u.S.E. Linux] Kernel Compile Question

It's time for me to try to compile my own kernel (2.0.33). My
difficulty is that I don't have enough space on my /usr partition to
install the kernel source. I know that the kernel source is normally
unpacked from /usr/src to /usr/src/linux...

Question: can I copy the linux.rpm source from the SuSE CD to say,
/opt/src (I have plenty of room on my /opt partition), and then unpack
the rpm file as if it were a tar.zip file? I assume that 'man rpm' will
tell me how to unpack the rpm file into a different directory.

Or must I make /usr/src/linux a symlink to, say, /opt/src/linux, then
just tell YaST to install the kernel source from the SuSE CD?

I've read the kernel-HOWTO, and followed the kernel threads here, but
I'm still not sure how to go about this.
