It's because of the Adaptec-Monster-BIOS. It has nothing to do with the
kernel but with the way LILO works: it has to do several BIOS calls in
order to load the image.
Try uncommenting the "compact"-line in /etc/lilo.conf and re-run lilo. It
works on almost every system. We do not enable the compact option by
default to be on the safe side.
The compact option tells LILO to try to load several blocks with one
single BIOS call. The difference is substantial ;-)
