I have the same problem as yours. right down to the sound card
(ESS1888).
Unlike yours, I found that the mixer works (by sliding the MIC all the
way down to zero). I'm using aumix.

Assuming that you are using the kernel sound support (as opposed to
OSS ) this is what I do

go to the /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/ and edit the file sb_mixer.h

change the line 206 to 0x0000,      /* Mic */

recompile your kernel. I'm using kernel version 2.0.35.

If you are using OSS, just add the like aumix -L at the end of file
soundon.

I have a 166MMX notebook with SuSE 5.2 installed - all went well and

Only problem is, the microphone stays on all the time with feedback

the integrated speakers, which is awfully annoying!
Tried the mixer with no success.

Question:  How do I turn off the microphone feedback through the
speakers?
