I had a similar experience with a Trident 9680 video card and SuSE's X
server for the card in 5.1.  When the latest XFree servers came out, I
installed the SVGA server (which supports TGUI 9680) and the problem went
away.

I would suggest installing the latest X server for your card before you
invest in a new video card.
