A few questions:

Are you installing precompiled packages ? I'll guess yes.

Did you get the SuSE versions (in the update section on the SuSE FTP
server) or the ones direct from KDE ?

You started off right by completely wiping Beta 3 before installing Beta
4 & the order of installation sounds correct - when did the errors start
and what did they say ?

As for advantages, Beta 3 was fairly stable but the filemanager died
every now and again & as it plays a central role, the whole environment
just packs up. It can still happen in Beta 4 but much more infrequently.
There are also a number of enhancements to the core apps as well as a
number of new ones. What you probably wnat to hear is that there is
enough new stuff to warrant upgrading (although the KDE 1.0 pre-release
sources are now out but I don't imagine this will be much different to
late Beta 4 versions).

BTW, always keep a terminal running somewhere, then if the environment
stops responding, just run kfm& from it and all should be well again.

Good luck,

Brian.
