Upps. Little misunderstanding. -q refers to the named (caching only)
named will write adresses and ip's requested in /var/log/messages.

I suppose netscape is doing DNS requests. if your nameserver is not
reacheable (offline) netscape might wait forever. (or it's checking
anything else not there for the same reason)
You hopefully can figure this out by installing a caching only
nameserver. Requests should be logged in messages (see above).
I used Netscape 3.x for similar resons quite a while unti I finally
managed to keep it quiet. .procmailrc did all the mail sorting. but
mozilla 4.x is still much more fun.
