7890 is the Adaptec chip used in the 2940 series of SCSI adapters as well
embedded controllers in some main boards. I believe the aic78xx would work
with the 7890 chip. I also suggest, (if you have not done so) search in
dejanews.com and if you can't find an answer post in
comp.os.linux.hardware and comp.os.linux.setup newsgroups.
