I use a cable modem, so I do not have any dial up programs on the
system.
The cable modem uses a ethernet card (eth0) to access the internet.
I also
have another card (eth1) which attaches via a hub to a M$ box.The
/sbin/init.d/firewall script was the problem (I still don't
understand that)
but it is functioning properly now.
