SuSE's kernels, IIRC, use an updated Adaptec driver that fully supports
the Adaptec Ultra 2 (not verified, and I still don't like Adaptec
hardware)

The BT-930 works just fine with new motherboards, and costs about $130.
(I've seen it for as low as $110)

Otherwise, something NCR/Symbios based (i.e. Asus SC875) is a good bet.

If all you need is fast narrow SCSI-II and don't need to boot from it,
then get an Asus SC-200 (discontinued but still around) for around $60.

fast narrow: SC-200, about $60
ultra narrow: BT-930, about $130
ultra wide: BT-950, about $160
