Sounds like the kernel runs completely out of memory. I think the disk
noise comes from pages being swapped in and out. What does "free" say
bevor trouble starts? You might want to type "ps -aux" to examine if there
is any program leaking memory. But even if so the kernel may not crash, of
course...
