[S.u.S.E. Linux] tonnes of disk activity....

I can't figure this one out, at weird times two of my systems which are
left on all the time will disk thrash like crazy that I can't even log in
to find out what's going on... I end up having to do a hard reset.
This is what I see in /var/log/messages after the system comes back up ,
Basically the system was not usuable from about 14:33 to 15:30 at which
time I did a hard reset.
Anyone else have this in their messages file? I'm using suse 5.1 kernel
2.0.33.
One system is a 486/33 with 16meg RAM, 16Meg swap, the other is a P166,
32meg ram and 64Meg swap.
