I've just got to comment on some nice things. 
Afterstep vs1.0 - NICE! - easy, clean and definitely not greedy. Vs 1.4
looks like being much the same.
TkDesk vs1.0b4 - Try it - its GOOD.
(These two were revisited after reading the LJ articles - I'm glad I
did!!)
TkRat (MUA) - Now THIS is ....GREAT.  I've used Pine, xfmail, TkMail
etc, but this one is loaded, and allows *excellent* control from the
keyboard.  Should be able to use standard pine/elm files with no
problem.
