If you open yast and select "Choose/Install packages", then choose "Install
packages" (the third item from the bottom on this menu).
The screen that comes up is a horizontally split window with "Source:
(none)" highlighted blue in the upper left hand corner. Hit the down arrow
and you are given a choice of "Directory, FTP, Source medium, or Floppy"
(this is how you update via ftp and suse's ftp server, too). Select
"Directory" and point to your rpm's.
I installed beta-3 via ftp (even while using kde as my window manager while
doing it) and it worked perfect.
Good luck
