A test with OS11.3 livecd made the problems disappear.
KMS is disabled (except for Intel of course) on the openSUSE 11.3 LiveCD. That's likely the reason why it works with the LiveCD. And another reason to give 'nomodeset' a try. Best regards, Stefan
