If you are using pulseaudio you might want to try installing pavucontrol and see if that works better.

I just noticed that I cannot get the microphone on the web cam to work.
openSUSE 12.1, xfce 4.8
I noticed the behavior while trying to use Google video chat. I noticed
in the "Mixer" application that when I select the webcam (HP Deluxe
KQ246AA) for "PulseAudio Mixer) the "Master" control always has a red
dot at the bottom, I take it that implies it is disabled. When I enable
it there was no change in behavior. If I leave the mixer and return to
the dialog the button is red again.

There is also an "Alsa mixer" selection with a microphone selector in
the "Mixer" application. This is enabled, but the mic still didn't work.
I am wondering if there are some other knobs I am missing. The camera is
connected via usb and picture capture works just fine.
Any ideas?
