The idea is to use basic categories (naming) from http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Startseite as much is it is applicable to us, with layout created by Shayon. I second this! As Kenny said earlier "usability=success" - we should focus on providing a portal that's both usable and not overloaded with too much content. The user should get an overview quickly.
Also we should place our (to be worked-out) Guidelines prominently at the portal as kind of a "Getting started" section.
