I do not touch "foreign" translation files besides merging. Only if I'm asked about it. That's what happen with the German file. French is now merged, too.
These commands seem to do the trick:
l=fr wget http://l10n.gnome.org/POT/gnome-packagekit.HEAD/gnome-packagekit.HEAD.$l.po msgmerge -o new.$l.po -C gnome-packagekit.HEAD.$l.po \ $l/po/gnome-packagekit.$l.po 50-pot/gnome-packagekit.pot mv new.$l.po $l/po/gnome-packagekit.$l.po svn ci -m'update from http://l10n.gnome.org/POT/gnome-packagekit.HEAD/' \ $l/po/gnome-packagekit.$l.po
