Thanks Ruprecht (and others). Updated virus pattern and detects OK now. The confusion arose because, over the last year or so, I had already installed AmaVis, SpamAssassin, the Perl version of Spammassin and various other anti-spam and anti virus products using daemons, perl and other techniques. My system was pretty much 'cludged'. I then installed the SuSE V8.1 update which, due to a previously unknown hardware fault with my CDROM, fell over halfway through :-( Methinks the answer may be to backup all data and re-install from scratch. Oh - and just to be clear. The user I sent bugbear to was, of course, myself through the system I operate myself. I run linux :-) Anyway, thanks again. Hi Ulrich Roth,
.. and Amavis and have tried sending the eicar.com virus pattern in an attachment.
Which virus scanner do you use on your SuSE box, and is it up to date?
The eicar virus-pattern is only a line for testing virusscanners. It selve is not a virus. The community of av-software-producers found that the eicar-pattern can be used for testing the av-scanners. So every scanner should detect that pattern with any for it specific virus-db-file.
I suggest try the same with different scanners that you combine with amavis.
