It is possible. I got a 5.3 running with XFree86-4.1.something a while
ago. It needed some tweaking (kernel, glibc, special environment to
preload the new glibc, other "It-is-possible-but-useless"-stuff), and it
smelled pretty badly, I must say, especially if seen from the security
standpoint.
It is better to run a newer distribution.
