Hi Alberto, Hi Folks, Alberto Butrico wrote: Friday, October 26, 2001 8:38 PM Subject: [suse-security] I forgot my root password
I have a SuSE 7.1 box with 2.4.7 kernel. I forgot my root password (yes, i am an idiot).
Poor boy.
How can I make to reset it?
I can tell you.
I have tried to boot as "lilo: linux single" but anyway he asks me for the root password.
Of course.
I have tried too boot with a CDrom but with same result.
How did you boot (boot installed system?)? You've got to boot the rescue-system. When booting is ready, you can login as root without password. You still have no access to the installed system you've got to mount it to eg. /mnt. When you enter /mnt you'll find your system. Just open /etc/passwd and delete the X-entry in the first line (root:0:X.......). Don't forget to write the file back and do a reboot without cd and have a lot of fun again... If this won't work do the same on /etc/shadow. Running this method means to delete root's password. Of course, it has to be redefined via yast or passwd-command.
