I think it is not a good idea to give the people a clue as wich users they might login.
In general, this is not a secret. "cat /etc/passwd" or "ls /home" show this information too.
Not on my shell server. I removed world read permissions from /etc/passwd and ls /home returns "permission denied" to any shell user. I found that removing world read permissions from /etc/passwd causes many problems, but after much trial and error, I found a way to solve enough of the problems to satisfy my needs on this shell server.
