"hint zone"?? I don't understand. My DNS server is supposed to be caching only server. What is the [196.4.160.2].53 DNS server trying to do? If the answer is obvious please point me to the right docs.

Hi Steven,
the information that you need is in /usr/share/doc/packages/bind8
(/usr/doc/packages/bind8 respectively, for SuSE older than 7.0).
The "hint" zone is to give the nameserver a hint on where to find its
root-nameservers. This is to be understood literally: bind8 reads the
root-hint file upon startup and asks _all_ configured root-nameservers for
the current delegation of the root-zone. This explains the meaning of
"hint" as opposed to master+slave.
