By exploiting this bug by using a malicious server an attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the entity running the process locally. (CVE-2005-3185) This affects both curl/libcurl and wget >= 1.10. wget copied the code from libcurl, making this effectively the same problem. 2) Solution or Work-Around There is no known workaround, please install the update packages. 3) Special Instructions and Notes Please close and restart all running instances of programs using libcurl after the update. 4) Package Location and Checksums The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them. Alternatively, download the update packages for your distribution manually and verify their integrity by the methods listed in Section 6 of this announcement. To prevent users from playing tricks in there e.g. linking to /etc/shadow chkstat doesn't touch symlinks or files with an hardlink count != 1. Stefan Nordhausen discovered a way to trick this check. To gain access to e.g. /etc/shadow a malicious user has to place a hardlink to that file at a place that is modified by chkstat. chkstat will not touch the file because it has a hardlink count of two. However, if the administrator modifies the user database the original /etc/shadow gets deleted and replaced by a new one. That means the hardlink count of the file created by the malicious user drops to one. At this point chkstat will modify the file's permissions so anyone can read it. So it's technically impossible for chkstat to modify permissions of files in world writeable directories in a secure way. One such world writeable directoy in level 'easy' is /usr/src/packages/RPMS. Only subdirectories need to be adjusted in this case. Since normal users cannot create hard links to directories the problem can be solved by telling chkstat to not accept regular files. Another problematic directory is /var/games. Only members of group 'games' may write to it but it's likely that games with setgid 'games' are exploitable to allow user to gain group 'games' membership. The updated permissions package now tells chkstat when to only accept directories and no longer touches anything below /var/games to solve the described problems. On SUSE Linux 9.0 xmcd contained world writeable directories that suffered from the same problems. Updated xmcd packages for SUSE Linux 9.0 are therefore provided as well. This happens due to the work-around code of SSL_OP_MSIE_SSLV2_RSA_PADDING which is included in SSL_OP_ALL (which is commonly used in applications). (CAN-2005-2969) Additionally this update adds the Geotrusts Equifax Root1 CA certificate to allow correct certification against Novell Inc. websites and services. The same CA is already included in Mozilla, KDE, and curl, which use separate certificate stores. 2) Solution or Work-Around Please install the updated packages. A work-around would be to disable SSL v2 support in the applications. 3) Special Instructions and Notes Restart all services using SSL communication. 4) Package Location and Checksums The preferred method for installing security updates is to use the YaST Online Update (YOU) tool. YOU detects which updates are required and automatically performs the necessary steps to verify and install them. During the audit, several integer wrap arounds and buffer overflows have been discovered and fixed. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list md5 sums or download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for more severe vulnerabilities. Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP server and via the YaST Online Update. - imap-lib crashes in client library The client part of the University of Washington IMAP implementation is prone to a buffer overflow while parsing mailbox names. This bug can probably be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the affected mail client. (CAN-2005-2933). The 'imapd' that is included in the "imap" package itself is not affected by this problem. This problem affects all SUSE Linux based products. - texinfo temporary file handling fixes The handling of temporary files in the texinfo package was enhanced. Previous versions can be exploited by local users to overwrite arbitrary files. (CAN-2005-3011) This affects all SUSE Linux based products. - cfengine temporary file handling fixes This update of cfengine improves the handling of temporary files. This bug can be exploited locally and probably be used to escalate privileges. (CAN-2005-2960) This affects SUSE Linux 9.0 up to 10.0. - abiword buffer overflow in RTF import filter The Abiword word processor was updated to fix several buffer overflows that can be triggered by parsing malformed RTF documents (CAN-2005-2964). This affects SUSE Linux 9.0 (package name abiword2), SUSE Linux 9.1 up to 10.0 (package name abiword). - various vnc servers affected by the pixmap integer overflow Various VNC Servers were also affected by the integer overflow problem in the pixmap handling (CAN-2005-2495). An attacker may be able to exploit this bug to execute code remotely. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 8, SUSE Linux Desktop 1 used the "vnc" package, newer products use the "XFree86-vnc" or "xorg-x11-vnc" packages. The authenticity and integrity of a SUSE security announcement is guaranteed by a cryptographic signature in each announcement. All SUSE security announcements are published with a valid signature. To verify the signature of the announcement, save it as text into a file and run the command gpg --verify <file> replacing <file> with the name of the file containing the announcement. The output for a valid signature looks like: gpg: Signature made <DATE> using RSA key ID 3D25D3D9 gpg: Good signature from "SuSE Security Team <security(a)suse.de>" where <DATE> is replaced by the date the document was signed. If the security team's key is not contained in your key ring, you can import it from the first installation CD. To import the key, use the command gpg --import gpg-pubkey-3d25d3d9-36e12d04.asc - Package authenticity verification: SUSE update packages are available on many mirror FTP servers all over the world. While this service is considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, the authenticity and integrity of a package needs to be verified to ensure that it has not been tampered with. The internal RPM package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA. The SUSE Security Summary Reports do not list md5 sums or download URLs like the SUSE Security Announcements that are released for more severe vulnerabilities. Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP server and via the YaST Online Update. - resmgr usb device restriction problems resmgr is the SUSE way of providing device access to logged in desktop users. The following security problems were fixed in resmgr: - By using alternate syntax for specifying USB devices instead of a /proc/bus/usb path one could bypass access control rules and open any USB device. - Class specific exclude rules did not match devices that set their class ID at interface level. Therefore the default exclude rules for HID and hub devices did not work on many devices. This would allow a local attacker (logged into another X session or text console with desktop rights) to snoop on USB human input devices like keyboard or mice of other users. This problem affects only SUSE Linux 9.2 and 9.3. - liby2util problems with untrusted remote repositories Rene "l00m" Fischer found two problem in the handling of YaST package repositories. - The remote repositories were copied with permissions and ownerships intact. If the remote repository was owned by a user or had problematic permissions, these ownership and permissions were copied over to the system. If these included world writable permissions local users could overwrite package meta files. This problem is not present when installing from CD or a correctly set up network source. - The YaST package handling had a buffer overflow which could be used by attackers having access to the meta data (for instance due to above permission problem) to potentially execute code. These problems have been fixed with this update. All SUSE Linux based products were affected by this problem. A problem appeared in the SUSE Linux 9.1 update due to a symbol mismatch caused by incompatible changes in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 which were not correctly merged back to SUSE Linux 9.1. If you are using SUSE Linux 9.1 and can no longer start YaST package manager or online_update, please reinstall the liby2util RPM from the original CD by hand. - Mediawiki edit history problems A bug in mediawiki Wiki edit submission handling could cause corruption of the previous revision in the database if an abnormal URL was used, such as those used by some spam bots. This mediawiki update contains fixes up to MediaWiki version 1.4.10. SUSE Linux 9.3 and 10.0 are affected by this problem. - powersave permission problems The powersave interfaces allows logged in desktop users to control certain power management functions of the machine. A configuration problem of the powersave daemon in SUSE Linux 10.0 allowed any local user to control the powersave daemon, allowing him for instance to suspend the machine. Additionally some bugs were fixed: - When doing CPU frequency scaling, the nice factor was not considered correctly. - The patch also fixes a problem were an ACPI button press was not ignored after coming back from sleep and so the system shut down again. - If the haldaemon is not running, powersave opens dbus connections without closing them after wards. These bugs only affect SUSE Linux 10.0. - bacula tmp race fixes A fixed version of bacula was released that improves its handling of temporary files. Only SUSE Linux 10.0 is affected. - Various user applications used LD_LIBRARY_PATH unsafely Several user applications handle LD_LIBRARY_PATH unsafely. By just appending paths to LD_LIBRARY_PATH they caused the program to also search the current directory for shared libraries. In directories that contain network data those libraries could be injected into the respective application. We already released updates for following applications: - beagle for SUSE Linux 9.3 and 10.0. - tomboy for SUSE Linux 9.3 and 10.0. - liferea for SUSE Linux 10.0. - blam for SUSE Linux 9.3 and 10.0. - banshee for SUSE Linux 10.0. Fixes for more applications will be released. - dia svg import code execution This update of dia fixes a bug in the SVG import plugin which allows the execution of Python code. The internal RPM package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an RPM package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, replacing <file.rpm> with the filename of the RPM package downloaded. The package is unmodified if it contains a valid signature from build(a)suse.de with the key ID 9C800ACA. This key is automatically imported into the RPM database (on RPMv4-based distributions) and the gpg key ring of 'root' during installation. Defacement of several Novell websites

Hi, As you probably know, several Novell hosted web sites got defaced by a vandal on the weekend. The vandalized hosts wiki.novell.com, opensuse.org, and forge.novell.com are actually virtual hosts living on one machine, making this one affected machine. The intruder gained access to the system by exploiting a known vulnerability in the "Xoops" blog software installed on another virtual host on this system (www.novell.com/prblogs/). This software was not upgraded to the latest security fixed version. The host affected is fully separate from our RPM and security fix delivery machines, so the integrity of our distributions and update repositories was not affected.
