The only difficulty I can think of is if both Ruby 1.8 and 1.9 were installed on the same system, and gem 'foo-1.2.3' was needed simultaneously for both installations. But this difficulty also exists within the suffixed naming scheme, so it's not a valid reason to reject the above non-suffixed proposal.
Agreed. And zypper should be able to sort it out based on the dependencies.
