please correct me if i'm reading your point incorrectly:

what is the benefit (to openSUSE, the project, the community, etc) of
establishing a "class" system and putting one "class" above the others?

benefit to the Maybe-Member-To-Be.

[now i know that a large number of earthings who still consider
social/economic classes as something important and needed considerable
attention to 'climb' from one to another--but, in a world wide, mostly
volunteer software building/distributing/supporting organization? come
on...]

Economic value of going into that inner circle, yes.
