to be fair, i've done exactly that ... and, on occasssion, received a
straightforward answer.  even had the developer re-open the bug a
couple of times themselves. ;-)

might be a bit easier on everyone if Jim's suggestion were taken up --
i.e., the default didn't unceremoniusly, with no comment, close the
bug as a 1st step.  _that_ sometimes leaves the user wondering: (1) do
i reopen the bug just to comment further? (2)  do i simply post
additional comments to the closed bug? is anyone still paying
attention to it? (3) do i email the developer directly?

i can personally state that it's sometimes confusing, and sometimes
choosing one gets ... er ... let's say less than "optimal" response.

good policy, i believe.  one that works only if practiced by all
parties concerned ...

just an observation -- even in this thread, _inviting_ the discussion,
it really does tend to sound like "users vs developers", doesn't it.
certainly not a "one project for all" vibe ...
