Thanks for all the replies. They prompted me to re-assess my assumption about 
alien FROM addresses not getting accepted by most SMTP servers (which is true 
for the SMTP server of web.de, which I use by default).

It turns out that one of the SMTP servers that I have access to does actually 
accept me sending with the opensuse.org sender address. So I'm fine.
