Perhaps we're just recalling two different meetings ;) hehe.
I also dislike forums -- I find the interfaces atrocious, and can't
fathom that users can even tolerate them, let alone prefer them to a
good fat email client.
But there's no accounting for taste :)

Though I think gmane caters to a very different audience than a phpBB
instance -- so it perhaps doesn't address the original poster's point,
though it -is- very good news. :)
