Just a side aspect, even if you have such an enviroment, you do still have the 
problem that you can not link any GPL software against it. Of course you can 
use other licenses and reimplement quite a lot but this breaks actually the 
idea of free software as intended by the GPL.

So, to keep the "free" idea of GPL we need to free the codecs.

I personally see the only way in the long term to get something like odf also 
for sound and video content. _If_ we get for example the EU also to require 
free formats for sound and video more and more hardware and software of 
non-open source based solutions.

IIRC the FSF works already in this direction for sound formats.
