You need to be careful when comparing kernel update policies. The Fedora
project (or RedHat) sometimes releases completely new kernel versions as
updates. In this case, retaining the old kernel version on disk is
essential. However, the OpenSuSE project (or to be more precise, Novell)
backports bug fixes and security enhancements to the kernel version that
was shipped with the original release. Therefore, the situation is
slightly different. Nevertheless, bug fixes and kernel updates can cause
problems. Therefore, I agree with you that it would be better to retain
the current kernel as fallback boot option. With today's disk capacities
it shouldn't be such a big problem. We've encountered SuSE/OpenSuSE
kernel update problems in the past and it would have been nice at that
time if we had a fallback boot option in grub.
