I'm almost positive my 15 year old Compaq Tru64 UNIX training recommended putting all long term mount points in the root and I've seen it done by dozens of different customers (ie. situations where I did not make the decisions).
A great OS (worked as a contractor at Digital for 17 years, 6 in the
Unix Development Environment group). Actually, one wants to keep the
number of mount points at root down to a minimum. One reason for this
is that some software and commands cause a stat command to be run on
root and its mount points.
