Agreed.. /etc is for configuration files, not data file. If you place a
configuration file in /etc, which is appropriate, it could point to
where the data file is located.
The other issue I did not mention in my post is how are you going to
resolve multi-access issues when more than one user is updating the
file. There are a number of locking mechanisms available, such as
flock(2).
