tar runs fine from a command line but not in script?

Running the following from a command line, it works, the *.gz is created. From within a script, the *.gz file is created but its 0 bytes? Any help out there today? TIA. /bin/tar -cvf- /etc | /bin/gzip -9 > /humboldt/osbackup/`hostname`.etc.gz
