I DEFINITELY second the motion on the Intel compiler, I have used both FORTRAN & C & they are definitely FAST, & usually more than good enough to handle all but the most esoteric code constructs.
If you only want to optimize for Intel chips and don't want to support Linux on AMD64 the Intel compilers are a good choice.

Actually I have run code from the IA32 compiler on 32 bit AMD (not 64 bit) & it was faster than other compilers (ABSOFT, by a bit, G77 by a bunch). Can't (yet) vouch for AMD64 ....
