For 3D I would also recommend OpenInventor. Its available for Linux from SGI and built on top of OpenGL . This means that certain low-level routines have been implemetned and you don't have to go into the finest details to draw a textured triangle and have a camera look at it :-) It works perfect with C, and also opens /writesVRML files.
