Hi, I'm trying to learn glade. autogen.sh failed on my first try; giving the error below: ./configure: line 4068: syntax error near unexpected token `PACKAGE,' ./configure: line 4068: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(PACKAGE, $pkg_modules)' Then i learned that i had to install pkgconfig; i did so; but this time autogen gave the following error: checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.0... Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'gtk+-2.0' found configure: error: Library requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them. How do i have to set PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just saw a few statements taken out of the ncurses-programming-howto which confused me a little... I am doing a menu and for a menu you are asked to keep a static array of pointers (that should be available as long as your menu is posted).. and then using a function you link items array of pointers to the previously created array.. Now if you just link pointers, or better said just assign them the value of other pointers, what need do you have to get memory for them: my_items= (ITEM **)calloc(5, sizeof(ITEM *)); Arent pointers treated like the rest of the common data type in the sense that memory for them is assigned automatically ? Or am I misunderstanding something ? Thanks, Raul

ncurses

Hi, I am developing an app heavily based on ncurses, nothing critical though just for fun (got no project!) and I have to questions: - I create a few windows, that then I use as buttons (something like the bottom menu of midnight commander), with derwin(). Now the man page doesnt state if you have to call delwin on them (cause it seems derwin is different from newwin), so should I ? - My other question is more about style.. I am not quite sure if I should separate in two different layers my flow control and my ncurses rutines.. the idea is to keep the code clean so adding features doesnt become such a headache. trouble compiling a compiler

I have been having trouble compiling an older gcc. I get the following when I try to compile either gcc-3.1.1 or gcc-3.1. I have also tried compiling with a gcc-3.1.1 compiler, not the gcc-3.3. I think the problem is not related to the compiler, but maybe something I have installed or don't have installed. Hello, i'm a Linux programming newbie. I developed several programs for Windows and i often use WaitForSingleObject and WaitForMultipleObjects in my programs. Is there a linux implementation of WaitForSingleObject and WaitForMultipleObjects? Or, how can i wait for multiple objects (event, semaphores, etc) ? Thanks, A. Roth

A question on passing descriptors between processes (in C)

Hi all! I am writing a little irc-like server to learn unix programming in C. As a cool excercise, I would like to do a way to make my program upgrade without any downtime. So here it is my idea: First process: loader This is not the part of the server which must be upgraded. The only thing to do is getting a deamon, then forking and execing the real server. Then sleeping until a signal awakes it to fork and exec the next (upgraded) server. Second process: the server It must be upgraded. It does the real job, handles connections and so on. It handles also the downloading of the upgraded server. It works until it receives a signal that put it in the "greeting mode" which I describe below. Third process: the upgraded server It does the real job, but first he must have all data and socket descriptors from the "Second process", so it starts in "coming mode". The greeting and coming modes are those when the data (and socket descriptors) exchange occur. I am thinking about unix domain sockets to make socket descriptors and data pass (as described in Stevens' book, the first one on network programming). So, this is my question: there is a simpler way to do that? Is my idea good? Praise
