The last remaining question I have is if I'll need to recompile the kernel on each security update?
Yes, the kernel-default with PReP support will be replaced during an update with a kernel-default without PReP support.
Ah, ok. I will have to keep that in mind for when I upgrade. Switching from debian to suse 10.0 was nice in this regard that I didn't have to recompile kernels for updates, but I understand there are probably few running suse on prep ppc.
