Hello All,

I am attempting to install SuSE Linux 7.3 PowerPC Edition on an RS/6000 7025
F50 using a terminal connected to the first serial port.

I have tried several distributions and kernels and the closest I have come
to installation has been using the following binaries
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.3/suse/images/zImage.initrd
<ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.3/suse/images/zImage.initrd>
or
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.3/suse/images/zImage.initrd-rs6k
<ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.3/suse/images/zImage.initrd-rs6k>

1) Wrote these files to CDROM and renamed them to ZIMAGE
2) Press "8" after the "keyboard" check is displayed on the screen to enter
the open firmware
3) I have tried the following commands and several combinations with the
same result
Try 1) boot cdrom:,\ZIMAGE
Try 2) boot cdrom:,\ZIMAGE console=ttyS0,9660n8
4) My terminal is set accordingly with vt100 emulation (I have also tried
other emulations)
5) Kernel begins to boot without any problems. Kernel boot messages scroll
very quickly but I am not able to see any obvious issues.
6) After the following message the display begins to move VERY slowly.
Approximately 20 character bursts every couple of minutes.

VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
Moving into tmpfs...done
Ramdisk memory successfully freed
>>> SuSE installation program v1.2 (c)

7) After an hour or so it will finish the initial hardware detection which
prints to the screen at the same rate stated on #6. If left alone for
several hours I am eventually greeted with the YaST1 screen to choose a
language.

This is the closest I have come with any distribution to an installation but
with the speed the terminal goes it takes a half hour to refresh a screen
and it is impossible to use the system. Any ideas or suggestions on how to
complete a successful install would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Christophe Banal
ps.
1) I have also tried the following binary
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.3/suse/images/zImage.initrd
<ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.3/suse/images/zImage.initrd>
2) with the following command to the Open Firmware
boot cdrom:,\ZIMAGE console=ttyS0,9660n8 root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1
fake_initrd
3) when prompted to insert the ramdisk in the floppy drive. I do so with a
ramdisk I have created using rawrite
I then receive the error unable to open device "fd0" please specify a
correct device with using "root="
