It is the newer XFree86.

This is wrong, the color depth 24 does not work on some mach64 chips
since XFree86 4.1 and it is still unfixed in 4.2. Try cmode:15.
Use defaultcolordepth 15 in your /etc/X11/XF86config.

This should be harmless.
