It should work with the sym53c8xx driver. Can you try this kernel and this ramdisk to boot into the installer?
ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/2.4.1/k_deflt-2.4.1-3.ppc.rpm ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/2.4.1/vmlinux-deflt-2.4.1-3.gz ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/2.4.1/ramdisk.image.deflt.gz
You can check in linuxrc -> system info -> kernel messages if the card and the attached devices appear.

Thanks a lot for all the help. The problem persists. I have rewritten the yaboot.conf file 50 times and booted both with and without SCSI drivers. For now I have "given up", tomorrow I am going to install it on the ATA drive. But any last ideas are more than welcome. Thanks a lot Regards Even
