After upgrading from 12.2 to 12.3 I started to get a dialog after logging into KDE asking me to install a "calendar data engine". Unfortunately the wizard can't actually find the package which turns out to be kdebase4-workspace-plasma-calendar. Since this package is required by the plasma clock widget for full operation it should either be required by kdebase4-workspace or merged into kdebase4-workspace. Based on the changelog from when the package was originally split off it's supposed to be recommended by kdebase4-workspace, but when I check it in 12.3 it's not. Is there any good reason for this package to be split? Is merging a split package into the main package on a released version of openSUSE allowed?

# kdebase4-workspace.changes ------------------------------------------------------------------- Wed Dec 7 14:18:37 UTC 2011 - saschpe@suse.de
- New subpackages plasma-engine-akonadi and plasma-calendar: * Removed %kde4_akonadi_requires from base package, otherwise half of KDE depends on akonadi-runtime. * Both are recommended by base package
I'll give you two ways of an answer: One emotional, one technical: Emotional: Get me the hell away from akonadi and it's dep. shit. Technical: Does cyclical dependencies ring a bell? Either keep akonadi-runtime out of KDE base packages, or it will take a hell more of time to build KDE on obs. Better would be to include plasma-calendar into the akonadi package. The clock applet work fine without akonadi. To get KDE / Plasma working and do so reliably fast even on weaker systems (4-8 core Intel cpu @4GHz versus ARMv7) we have to make some packages optional. The ability to run Plasma without akonadi and nepomuk is essential for such weaker hardware. Since KDE3 there is no Kmail that is working "just" great. The causes lay (mainly) within Akonadi and Nepomuk and their use by Kmail. I've had to switch to Thunderbird with KDE4. Take your poison. A stable, ready for production system, that lacks some extras, or one tricked out and tricky to keep running to your satisfaction. For me a stable system is much more worth. - Yamaban.
