Not sure if it's true what I say:
As much as I know .dat is a mpg1 file from a video-CD. *Sometimes* it helps
just to rename the file to .mpg.
If mplayer doesn't play it, give a try to the VLC media player:
http://www.videolan.org/
Whenever I couldn't play something using my common programs, the VLC media
player could...
